Who is Nikole Hannah-Jones?
Nikole Hannah-Jones is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. She is best recognized for her work in The New York Times Magazine, where she covered the issue of racial injustice. She is also known for developing the groundbreaking The 1619 Project, which is now a Hulu original docuseries.
2015 was a life-changing year for her careerwise because she landed a job as a staff writer at The New York Times in April 2015. She earned the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2020 for her efforts on The 1619 Project, and in 2017 she was granted a MacArthur Fellowship.

Hannah-Jones and her sister were enrolled in a voluntary desegregation busing scheme, which allowed them to attend mostly white schools. Her time at Waterloo West High School culminated with her 1994 graduation, during which she contributed to the school newspaper.

Hannah-Jones started her career in 2003 as a school reporter for the Raleigh News & Observer, where she covered the mostly African American Durham Public Schools. She worked there for three years.
She started working as a staff reporter at The New York Times in 2015. Hannah-Jones has discussed on national public radio broadcasts and published works on subjects like inequality in housing, racial segregation in society, and desegregation and resegregation in American schools.
She writes in order to uncover and expose systemic and institutional racism, which she claims is reinforced by official laws and behaviors. Her work on racial inequality has been very impactful and widely recognized.
Hannah-Jones initiated the 1619 Project in 2019 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first African slaves in Virginia with the goal of transforming public perception of slavery in the United States.
