Hema began her broadcasting career in Midland, Texas, and later moved on to stations in El Paso, Texas, and Denver, Colorado. She began working for CBS Austin KEYE in 2014.
She received the Lone Star Emmy in 2010 for her contribution to a documentary about female pilots deployed in El Paso during World War II.
Hema was a nominee for Best Anchor in the 2018 Texas Associated Press Broadcasters contest as well as a nominee for a Lone Star Emmy in 2017 and 2018 for the state of Texas.
